The Met Office weather warnings come into force as Storm Benjamin brings heavy rain and wind gusts in excess of 70mph.

The Met Office has issued four yellow weather warnings as Storm Benjamin could bring disruption on Thursday with flooding, travel disruption or power cuts.

The weather warnings covers southern England, East Midlands, Yorkshire and parts of Wales which are currently in place from midnight until 6pm.

A second yellow warning is in place for rain in East Anglia and Lincolnshire from midnight until 9pm. And south east England the warnings are in place from 3am until midnight.

The forecaster said gusts of 50 to 60mph are “probable quite widely” with winds speeds of 65 to 70mph “possible near coasts.”

The forecaster added, “There is a smaller chance, should Storm Benjamin be at the stronger end of expectations, that wind gusts in excess of 70mph could develop for a time very locally, this most likely late morning and into the afternoon.”

Chief meteorologist Rebekah Hicks said, “It is worth noting that there is a greater than usual uncertainty surrounding the track and intensity of this low-pressure system.

“The public should stay up to date with the latest forecasts and warnings as the situation evolves, with adjustments to the forecasts likely at short notice.”
