During this year’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC 2024) keynote, Apple introduced next-generation versions of its most important operating systems. One of these is iPadOS 18 for the iPad. The update arrives this fall and includes several new features, including Apple Intelligence, advanced Notes tools, a high-tech Calculator app, better home screen customization, and more.

Unfortunately, not every Apple tablet can run this software update when it’s released. Has your iPad made the list? Let’s find out.

Apple’s iPadOS 18 update will support the following iPad models:

  • iPad Pro (M4)
  • iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd generation and later)
  • iPad Pro 11-inch (1st generation and later)
  • iPad Air (M2)
  • iPad Air (3rd generation and later)
  • iPad (7th generation and later)
  • iPad mini (5th generation and later)

In addition to the tablets mentioned above, whatever new iPads Apple might release before the end of the year will almost certainly arrive with iPadOS 18 pre-installed. This may include an 11th-generation iPad and an all-new iPad mini. Apple recently released new versions of the iPad Pro and iPad Air, the company’s first new tablets since 2022.

As you can see, many iPads will support iPadOS 18, which is good news for anyone who owns a model and is looking forward to using it when it’s released.

According to Apple, iPads with the A10X Fusion chip won’t be able to run iPadOS 18. These models, which do support iPadOS 17 but won’t work with iPadOS 18, include:

  • 10.5-inch iPad Pro
  • 12.9-inch iPad Pro (2nd generation)
  • iPad (6th generation)

Besides iPadOS 18, Apple also introduced iOS 18, watchOS 11, and visionOS 2 at WWDC. For Macs, macOS 15 Sequoia was revealed. However, the star of the nearly 90-minute keynote address was Apple Intelligence. It’s a new system from Apple that uses AI to make your Apple devices more helpful. Parts of Apple Intelligence are expected to be released this fall, although others might not arrive until early 2025.

The latest software versions are currently available for developers to test. Public beta versions should first become available in early July, with the first public versions coming in September or October.
