Former US ambassador and Lord, Peter Mandelson, has been arrested by the Metropolitan police as he was seen being escorted from his North London home on Monday afternoon.

Mandelson has been accused of passing on information to Jeffrey Epstein, with authorities investigating potential misconduct involving high-profile figures, highlighting the seriousness of the allegations.

Mandelson’s arrest, just days after the incident involving Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor at his Sandringham home, underscores the government’s ongoing efforts to be transparent and accountable, aimed at reassuring the public during this period of scrutiny.

Darren Jones told the House of Commons that the government is reviewing material related to Lord Mandelson’s diplomatic service, including records from his tenure as the UK’s Ambassador to the US, to promote accountability and keep the public informed.

Jones said documents would be released in batches once they had been cleared for publication, rather than being disclosed all at once.

Members of Parliament voted earlier in February to require the government to release records relating to:

  • The appointment process for Mandelson’s ambassadorial role
  • Documentation from his period in the diplomatic post

The move was framed as a transparency measure to keep the public informed and confident in the government’s actions, rather than an indication of criminal proceedings.

The Met Police said on Monday, “Officers have arrested a 72-year-old man on suspicion of misconduct in public office.

He was arrested at an address in Camden on Monday, 23 February and has been taken to a London police station for interview.

“This follows search warrants at two addresses in the Wiltshire and Camden areas.”

Shadow cabinet minister Mike Wood said: “Careful work must not become a euphemism for managed delay.

“It is time the Government stopped treating Parliament like an inconvenient interruption to their schedule, stopped giving every impression that they have priorities working out who’s back to cover, and started providing some actual answers so that we can start to get to the bottom of this murky matter.”
