Last night The Telegraph found a memo that allegedly reveals the Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner urging the Chancellor to hit hard working savers with a billion-pound tax raid.
Rayner has called on Rachel Reeves to conduct a billion-pound tax raid on a million people who pay the higher rate of tax.
Andy McDonald, Jeremy Corbyn’s Shadow Transport Secretary, said: “My sense is that a lot of Labour MPs are concerned that the Chancellor’s fiscal rules and spending cut proposals hit those on lower incomes.
“Proposals to increase tax revenue from the wealthy would make tax fairer and support public services.
“Ideas outlined such as increasing tax rates on dividend income so they’re in line with income tax, something which should be done with capital gains tax too, would target a small number of wealthy people and bring in vital tax revenue.”
Corbyn’s Shadow Business Secretary Jon Trickett spat said, “The leadership’s fiscal strategy is a stale version of Treasury orthodoxy.
“Attacks on poor communities, pensioners and working people should never be a part of Labour’s armoury.
“There needs to be an open debate – not a clandestine one in closed rooms at the top – but at all levels of the Labour movement which reasserts our Labour values.”
The Shadow Foreign Secretary Priti Patel said, “Angela Rayner is addicted to spending your money and wants to come after your savings.
“Her secret memo is a plan for another Labour tax raid, punishing those who have worked hard and saved responsibly.
“This entire Labour Government continues to assault those who work hard, while Rayner and ministers just splurge your money on their own self-promotion.”
Conservative shadow chancellor Mel Stride said, “This confirms that we are still living with the Labour Party of Jeremy Corbyn. At the very highest level, Labour ministers are debating which taxes to increase next.”
