Former President Donald Trump has raised the prospect that the United States may direct its attention toward Cuba following the conclusion of the ongoing conflict with Iran.
This comment suggests a potential escalation of geopolitical tensions just a short distance from American shores, with significant implications for U.S. foreign policy.
During a recent reception at the White House honouring the football club Inter Miami, Trump implied that regime change in Havana could be on the horizon as the U.S. focuses on resolving its military engagements in the Middle East. We want to finish this one first,” he remarked, alluding to the war against Iran.
“But it will just be a question of time before you and many unbelievable people will be going back to Cuba.”
His words have fuelled speculation that the Biden administration might be preparing to increase pressure on Cuba’s communist government once the conflict in the Middle East is over.
In recent months, the White House has already intensified economic sanctions and regulatory measures against Havana, which has historically faced a range of sanctions from the U.S. The move to cut off Venezuelan oil shipments—an essential resource for Cuba, significantly contributing to its economy—has exacerbated the island nation’s struggles, especially given that its economy has been deteriorating for years.
Trump further emphasised his administration’s approach by commending Secretary of State Marco Rubio, a prominent figure in Cuban-American politics and the son of Cuban immigrants, praising him for his effective handling of U.S. policy toward Cuba. “And you’ve been doing a fantastic job on a place called Cuba,” Trump stated, prompting enthusiastic applause from the audience, which was largely composed of Cuban-American attendees keenly interested in the fate of their homeland.
The underlying sentiment shared by Trump and other senior Republican leaders, including Senator Lindsey Graham, suggests that the Cuban regime’s stability may be under threat if the U.S. continues to impose strict sanctions and political pressure. Graham specifically indicated that the days of the current Cuban government might be numbered if such pressure persists.
Analysts assert that the Trump administration believes a collapse of Iran’s government could lead to broader shifts in international dynamics that would affect other U.S. adversaries, including Cuba.
