The United Nations (UN) has warned that the world is “staring into the abyss of a Third World War” as Vladimir Putin has deployed long-range strategic nuclear capable bombers.

The Tu-22M3 bombers have been deployed in another show of aggression which could escalate conflict.

Meanwhile the UK is preparing to help bolster NATO’s eastern front as Poland, Lithuania and Latvia are fearing that Russia and Belarus “Zapad” military drills could be a precursor for an attack, Zapad means “West” in Russian.

This was witnessed between December 2021 and February 2022 when Putin deployed thousands of troops and military hardware such as tanks claiming it was a military exercise, which then turned into a full-scale war in Ukraine.

On Saturday Putin ordered Iskander missile launchers close to Poland’s border along with deploying the nuclear bombers, which comes a week after many Russian “suicide drones” violated Polish airspace triggering Article 4 of the NATO treaty.

Poland closed the Belarus border and deployed 40,000 Polish troops to their border as the “Zapad” military exercises take place.

NATO’s Secretary General Mark Rutte said that in the coming days “Eastern Sentry” has been activated which will see allies deploying assets including troops from the UK.

Rutte said on Friday, “In addition to more traditional military capabilities, this effort will also feature elements designed to address the particular challenges associated with the use of drones.”

A Ministry of Defence spokesperson said, “The UK is fully committed to playing our part in Nato’s Eastern Sentry following the reckless and dangerous airspace violations by Russia.

“We will provide further detail on the UK Armed Forces contribution soon.”

Ukraine’s permanent representative to the UN Andriy Melnyk gave a grim warning that if Russia’s escalation is not stopped, “tomorrow it could be drones or even missiles falling on Berlin, Paris, or London.”

He added, “And the day after, who knows, something might even ‘accidentally’ cross the Atlantic.”

Melnyk said that Russia has crossed so many red lines more recently attacking Poland with the “suicide drones,” he then warned, “Russia is not mocking this council. It is spitting in your face.

“We are staring into the abyss of a Third World War.”

Chief of the Belarus General Staff Pavel Muraveiko warned, “We are vigilantly monitoring all military activities near our borders and stand ready to counter any provocations that might occur during Zapad-2025.”
