The Washington Post named David Shipley, a senior editor at Bloomberg, on Thursday to oversee its opinion section.

Mr. Shipley takes on the job of editorial page editor after the death in December of Fred Hiatt, who had been The Post’s opinion chief for more than 20 years.

In a statement, Fred Ryan, the publisher of The Post, said Mr. Shipley would help “propel The Washington Post forward as we grow our global audience and find new and innovative ways to serve them.”

“David possesses the intellectual curiosity, thoughtful independence, journalistic integrity and evenhanded judgment essential in an editorial page editor,” Mr. Ryan said in a statement.

The Post said in a news release that Mr. Shipley, 59, would be tasked with expanding the reach of the opinion section both nationally and globally. The section has a staff of more than 80 people.

Mr. Shipley led the opinion section at Bloomberg for more than a decade. Before that, he was a deputy editorial page editor and the Op-Ed editor at The New York Times.

He also had a stint working for the Clinton administration in the 1990s and an interlude helping Michael R. Bloomberg, the founder of Bloomberg, with his short-lived 2020 presidential campaign.

In a memo to Post employees on Thursday, Mr. Ryan said Mr. Shipley was the “standout” in a seven-month search that had involved more than 150 candidates and that, Mr. Ryan assured staff, was “global and inclusive.”
